Ickey Woods does the “Ickey Shuffle” in GEICO ad

GEICO is a company we rip on regularly here at Awful Ads. Rightfully so. Most of their ads are just abysmal attempts to appeal to a demographic we haven’t quite yet figured out. Still, every now and then GEICO churns out an ad we can’t help but praise. The Dikembe Mutombo spot is a perfect example.

Now comes a name from the NFL days of old as Ickey Woods does the “Ickey Shuffle” in a new GEICO commercial.

Younger football fans or non-fans will have no clue who this guy is, but it’s a nice nod to the NFL of the late ’80s. Woods’ NFL career was extremely brief (1988-91), but he was a star in 1988 and took the sporting world by storm with his touchdown dance. Injuries ultimately cut his career short, but his dance lives on.

If you have no idea who Ickey Woods is, here’s a clip of him doing the infamous Shuffle.

There are the types of ads we like to see, GEICO. Ditch the gecko, pig and 98% of your other ideas and stick with the ads that work. We know we’re probably going to hate this ad after seeing it for the 500th time, but at least this one was enjoyable at some point. That’s more than we can say for most of GEICO’s offerings.
