Wayne Gretzky quote used to sell tequila - Good or bad idea?

Written by Reva Friedel on .

The fine folks over at Puck Drunk Love alerted us to the fact that one of Wayne's Gretzky's most famous quotes is being used to sell tequila.

The quote we're talking about is of course, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take".  Aww.  So motivational.  And true!  You certainly won't get anywhere by not trying, or something.

Well, Espolon Tequila (never heard of it, by the way) just had to add ONE word to give the quote a whole new meaning:  "You miss 100% of the Tequila shots you don't take".

Now, I can't say I agree with this.  Ignoring the fact that I don't drink tequila (unless it's Jimador and IN Mexico), I am not sure encouraging people to binge on shots of tequila is the best idea.  Not that I think they are explicitly promoting that but...I don't know.  The ad just doesn't sit well with me.

Pepsi - Drew Brees and One Direction - Part 2

Written by David Rogers on .

Pepsi recently unveiled a commercial that depicted a showdown between Drew Brees and One Direction for the last can of Pepsi. The concept was decent, the execution was mediocre (why are fans of various NFL teams cheering for Brees? No Saints fans?) and the singing from Brees was, as expected, dreadful.

Now Pepsi has released the second part of the ad showing what happened if Brees was successful in claiming the last Pepsi.

Unfortunately, the gag is a bit weak considering the idea isn't fleshed out very well. Would it have been that difficult to show One Direction on a football field, either through them visiting one or through CGI? We wish Pepsi would have used both ads simultaneously instead of running one continuously and then switching in the second. By the time this second part was released, consumers were already sick of the 25 seconds of buildup.

It's a solid concept. Unfortunately, poor execution and poor strategy have made this one ad we cringe at whenever it comes on.

Awful Classics: Norton Furniture uses LSD-fueled commercials

Written by David Rogers on .

Head on over to Norton Furniture in Cleveland where you're not only guaranteed to have your credit approved, but where you have a solid chance of getting murdered in the store. What dimension did this commercial come from? Why is this guy talking so slowly? Why is there a frog on the couch? More importantly, what's going on with the guy beneath the couch? So many questions.

Frightening furniture stores mixed with commercials that are clearly under the influence.

That's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them.

Brace yourself: Justin Bieber fragrance commercials are coming

Written by David Rogers on .

Make sure your television remote has fresh batteries - Justin Bieber fragrance commercials are coming. The singer has teased commercials for his fragrance, named Girlfriend, through Twitter over the past two weeks. The commercials will debut soon but here are a couple glimpses of the spots in case you can't wait to see what it would look like if you were Bieber's girlfriend. Admit it, you know you're curious.

Please accept our apology for adding fuel to the Justin Bieber fire. We'll hang our heads in shame and think about what we've done.

Jimmy Kimmel's iPad Mini commercial parody

Written by David Rogers on .

Are you excited to get your hands on Apple's new iPad Mini? Have you previously purchased an iPad from Apple? If so, this commercial parody from Jimmy Kimmel is for you.

Kimmel's spot is sure to resonate positively among Apple's critics while lighting a fire under the pants of Apple's biggest supporters. Surely Apple's biggest supporters can recognize that the iPad Mini is a blatant money grab, right? Wishful thinking.

Regardless of how Apple fanatics respond to this parody (we imagine it'll be nothing but negative), it's fun to take a journey down memory lane and see all the changes (or lack of changes) Apple has made to their products.

Oklahoma City Thunder appear in cheesy local car commercial

Written by David Rogers on .

Athletes and local car commercials. This formula almost always produces instant gold for our viewing pleasure. Watch as various members of the Oklahoma City Thunder appear in a local spot for Norman Chrysler.

Kendrick Perkins will not sing that goofy song. Kendrick Perkins may also kill you for suggesting he sing such a song. Kendrick Perkins is actually quite frightening.

Top 10 Mac vs. PC Commercials

Written by Reva Friedel on .

Even though it’s been a while since the Mac vs. PC ad campaign from Apple debuted (now it’s just them one-upping their own technology), I remember them well and recall that they had some gems.  So this week’s top 10 list is brought to you by Apple.

10) Viruses

Poor PC is sick because of all the viruses he is susceptible to.  I am a PC user (for now) and am well aware of all the viral issues.  For the brief time I did have a hand-me-down Mac, it worked wonderfully until one of my roommate’s high-as-a-kite friends broke the screen.  But no, I’m not bitter, just so we’re clear.

Viral football highlight becomes AT&T ad

Written by Matt Yoder on .

On Friday, this video of a high school practice featuring a player doing a back flip during a play was featured on Deadspin and became viral after existing on Youtube in anonymity for a few weeks...

The video jumped from just a few hundred views to a few hundred thousand.  Initially, it was a question whether or not the video was something real, something staged, or something faked all together.  A day later, we discovered what the viral video was all about - an AT&T commercial featuring reactions of people around the country (including Darren Woodson and Bob Stoops) to the viral video...

If AT&T planted that video on Youtube in hopes it would go viral organically right before their ad was published, it's one of the best strokes of marketing brilliance I've ever seen.  Without having known about the video's existence before seeing the commercial, I would have likely not given it a second thought.  But because the back flip was out there and intrigue surrounded its origins, I knew right away that this commercial was a success.  It was perfect timing in our short attention span world for the video to hit Friday and the ad Saturday.  And, as an added bonus, the ad connecting the viral video to AT&T actually makes sense!  How about that!

Now if only that kid can help Bob Stoops win a big game for once.
