CBS Cares Colonoscopy ad is a bit much

Written by David Rogers on .

You've just settled in to watch hours and hours of NCAA tournament coverage on CBS. Instead, you're met with Alan Kalter, the man famous for being the announcer on the David Letterman show, and he's here to talk to you about your colon. Kalter wants you to get a colonoscopy. In fact, he's having one right now.

The ad comes from a line of spots CBS has run over the years titled "CBS Cares", a series where the network offers advice on how viewers can have a healthy, happy life. The CBS cares concept is a perfectly fine one and it certainly has raised some solid points over the years, from charitable efforts to depression.

However, they could have tackled this subject a bit more delicately. Why is Kalter grinning so much while he's supposedly having a colonoscopy? Yeesh. They should have just stuck with the spot Kalter did a couple years back on the same topic. It's still strange, but way, way less disturbing.

AXE Apollo takes on Bryce Drew's Valparaiso buzzer beater

Written by David Rogers on .

Sorry Bryce Drew - your memorable buzzer beater in 1998 that pushed No. 13 Valparaiso past No. 4 Ole Miss was awesome, but apparently it's not as awesome as an astronaut. At least, that's what AXE is telling us in their new commercial for AXE Apollo where a galactic spin is added to an iconic sports moment.

Using footage from the original play, AXE inserted a voice over courtesy of Kevin Harlan. Thanks to a bit of clever editing and TV magic, they placed an astronaut on the Valparaiso bench - an astronaut which received all of the attention from the "broadcast" and from a swarm of cheerleaders after the buzzer beater as a dejected Bryce Drew looks on.

This sharp concept is a pretty a refreshing change when compared to the AXE ads of old. Old AXE ads have been so bad and annoying that we won't even tempt you to watch one by placing a link in this article. Instead, let's all rejoice that those in charge of marketing AXE gave us a breath of fresh air, figuratively speaking.

Be thankful you're not regularly subjected to this French McDonald's ad

Written by David Rogers on .

McDonald's and annoying, pointless advertisements go hand in hand. Unless you've permanently removed it from your memory (lucky you), you'll recall the "Fishy Fishy" song which made television nearly unwatchable for the better part of a month.

As it turns out, those of us in the United States have it easy. This French McDonald's ad belongs in a league reserved for awful concepts such as the Wax Vac and any ad where Pitbull shakes his fist.

This Canadian Purina cat food ad is a real head-scratcher

Written by David Rogers on .

This Canadian print ad for Purina's Fancy Feast cat food is a real head-scratcher. We understand the overall concept, that while your other dreams won't come true at least your dream of feeding your cat some fancy food will, but we're struggling to understand how anyone out there thought this concept would produce a worthwhile advertisement.

Where should we start?

Nike uses Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's image repeatedly in bizarre NCAA ads

Written by Reva Friedel on .

That young fellow you see in the photo above is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. In his only season at Kentucky, he helped lead the Wildcats to the 2012 National Title. He now plays for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Why is this important? I'm glad you asked. Deadspin pointed out that Nike is using the above image in a stock-photo type campaign, featuring many schools in this year's Big Dance. Nike was tweeting out its congrats last night as schools were announced during the selection show. Let's look at some examples, shall we?

The Seattle Mariners released another batch of outstanding commercials

Written by David Rogers on .

The Seattle Mariners have produced some terrific commercials over the course of the past several seasons. In fact, the Mariners have often received more positive buzz about their advertising than they have about their play on the field.

From a commercial that perfectly captivated the phenomenon that was Ichiro in his prime, to a folk song about Richie Sexson, the Mariners have had some memorable spots that received attention and praise from baseball fans around the country. The team recently released their ads for 2013, proving that at least off the field the Mariners would give their fans something to be proud of.

Bobby Knight and Digger Phelps eat at Applebee's

Written by David Rogers on .

What are Bobby Knight and Digger Phelps up to these days? They're sharing a 2 for $20 at Applebee's, of course. The two are enjoying a meal, allegedly bonding over some of Applebee's entrees.

A buzzer-beater sets Phelps off, yelling at Knight before gently he gently knocks over a stool. Knight steals the show, telling Phelps he has anger issues before claiming "that's not how you throw a chair." Give Knight credit for being able to poke some fun at himself.

At the same time, it's a bit tough to watch two coaching legends at this stage of their career. There are plenty of jokes we could make about two old men eating at Applebee's (especially considering Applebee's surrounded them by youthful adults), but we'll take the high road. After eating at Applebee's, Knight and Phelps have probably suffered enough.

Pete Rose and Kiana Kim show off their acting skills in furniture ad

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Incredibly, Pete Rose and Playboy model fiance Kiana Kim's reality show Hits & Mrs. was shelved after one season.  In fact, it barely made it through one season.  The last two episodes were moved from TLC to something called Destination America so as to prevent as many people from watching the abomination as possible. Keep in mind this is the same network that gleefully airs Honey Boo Boo, and yet somehow Pete Rose's reality show was FAR WORSE THAN THAT.  Apparently it missed that niche market of "awful trainwrecks people want to see" and tailed off into Cavemen territory.

Don't worry about Pete and Kiana though.  They've landed on their feet... somewhat... with this ad for Muenchen's Furniture in Cincinnati.  After seeing their "charisma" and "chemistry" in this commercial, it's a wonder they never worked out as reality television stars...
